We cannot know fully, but perhaps there are clues. Christian advisors had at some point gained access to the emperor’s thoughts or else his conversion, whatever we make of it, would be completely unintelligible.
Yet, the world in which he lived, grew up, and aspired to writing to an Dulwich College the purple was still mainly a pagan world.
